Santan Astrology: Children, Fertility, and Timing Predictions

Santan Bhava — the 5th house — is the primary indicator of children in Vedic astrology. But for serious analysis, three layers must be checked: 5th house from Lagna, 5th from Jupiter (the children-karaka), and the D7 (Saptamsa) chart.

Key indicators

  • 5th house clean — benefics or own/exalted lord = healthy progeny
  • 5th lord strong — fertility, easy conception
  • Jupiter well-placed — Jupiter is the universal santan karaka
  • Mars or Saturn afflicting 5th — delays or medical assistance often needed
  • Rahu or Ketu in 5th — adoption, IVF, unusual circumstances

D7 — the Saptamsa chart

The D7 chart divides each rashi into 7 parts and is the dedicated “children” varga. The D7 Lagna lord, planets in D7's 5th, and the D7 placement of natal 5th lord all confirm or override what the D1 5th house suggests.

Timing of children

Children typically come during the Mahadasha or Antardasha of: 5th lord, 9th lord (a Trikona to 5th), Jupiter, or planets in the 5th house — confirmed by Jupiter transit on the natal 5th, 9th, or Lagna.

Gender tendency

Odd vs even sign of the 5th, plus the planet ruling the Antardasha at conception, gives a probabilistic indication. Modern texts caution against over-determinism here.
