Jaimini astrology, attributed to the sage Jaimini, runs parallel to the Parashari system but uses signs (rashis) and karakas (significators by degree) more than houses and grahas. Its central insight: the planet at the highest degree in your chart — the Atmakaraka — is the soul-level karaka revealing what you came to learn this lifetime.

The 7 Chara Karakas (in degree order, highest first)

  1. Atmakaraka (AK) — the soul. Highest-degree planet. Your inner motive, lifetime mission.
  2. Amatyakaraka (AmK) — the minister. Career, profession, role you serve.
  3. Bhratrukaraka (BK) — siblings, courage, effort.
  4. Matrukaraka (MK) — mother, comfort, foundation.
  5. Putrakaraka (PuK) — children, creativity, intelligence.
  6. Gnatikaraka (GK) — relatives, conflicts, hidden enemies.
  7. Darakaraka (DK) — spouse, partnership, equality.

Karakamsa — the Atmakaraka in Navamsha

Find your Atmakaraka, then locate it in your D9 (Navamsha) chart. The sign it occupies is the Karakamsa Lagna — the soul's “true ascendant”, often more revealing than the natal lagna. From Karakamsa, the 5th house tells you your spiritual gifts; the 12th tells you what you must surrender.

Why Jaimini matters even if you study Parashari

Parashari excels at predicting external events; Jaimini excels at karmic context — why a chart works the way it does. Combining both is standard for any serious astrologer.
