The word Panchang literally means “five limbs” — the five elements of the Vedic calendar that together describe the cosmic quality of any given day. For thousands of years, no Hindu wedding, housewarming, business launch, or temple inauguration has begun without first consulting the Panchang.

The 5 limbs (Panch Anga)

  1. Tithi — the lunar day. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month; each carries a specific quality (Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta, Purna).
  2. Nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupies (one of 27).
  3. Yoga — a Sun-Moon longitude combination producing 27 specific qualities (Vishkambha, Siddhi, Shubha, etc.).
  4. Karana — half a Tithi, used for finer timing of activities.
  5. Vara — the weekday, ruled by one of the 7 grahas.

What the Panchang tells you

Beyond the 5 limbs, a complete Panchang shows sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset, Rahu Kalam (inauspicious 90-min window), Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit Muhurta (auspicious midday window), and the Hora (planetary hour) sequence. This is why your grandmother always seemed to know “don't start anything during Rahu Kalam”.

How to use it daily

  • Schedule big meetings during Abhijit Muhurta (~11:48-12:36 local solar time)
  • Avoid signing contracts in Rahu Kalam
  • Buy gold/start savings on Pushya Nakshatra days
  • Travel north on Monday/Wednesday rather than Tuesday/Thursday
  • Avoid Vyatipata or Vaidhriti yoga for new ventures
