D60 Shashtiamsha: Past-Life Karma in Your Vedic Chart

Of the 16 standard divisional charts, the D60 Shashtiamsha is the most subtle — and according to Parashari texts, the most important. It divides each rashi into 60 segments of 0°30' each, totalling 720 micro-positions, each ruled by a specific karmic deity (Ghora, Rakshasa, Deva, Kinnara, Bhrashta, Kulaghna, Garala, Vahni, Maya, Pishacha, etc.).

What D60 actually reveals

While D1 shows this lifetime's template, D60 shows the karmic seed from past lives that ripens into D1. A planet strong in D60 but weak in D1 says: this lifetime starts hard, but past-life merit (punya) eventually rescues. The reverse — strong D1, weak D60 — warns of borrowed luck.

The 5 karmic debt types

  1. Pitra rina — ancestor karma (Sun/Saturn affliction; 9th house issues)
  2. Matri rina — mother / nurture karma (Moon/Rahu affliction; 4th house)
  3. Bhratri rina — sibling / family karma (Mars affliction; 3rd house)
  4. Stree rina — feminine / partner karma (Venus / 7th house affliction)
  5. Putra rina — children / creativity karma (5th house affliction; Jupiter weak)

Vargottama placements

A planet in the same sign in D1 and D60 is vargottama in the most extreme sense — it has been carrying the same theme across lifetimes. This is where soul-level lessons concentrate.

Karmic remedies

Pitra Tarpan on Amavasya, Pitra Paksha rituals, donations on Saturdays, Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, and visiting your Kuldevi/Kuldevta temple are the classical karma-clearing practices.
