The Ashtakoot system — “eight pillars” — is the most widely used Vedic marriage compatibility test, scoring two charts on 8 dimensions for a maximum of 36 points. Above 18 is considered acceptable; above 24 is good; above 30 is excellent.

The 8 Kutas (with max points)

  1. Varna (1 pt) — spiritual compatibility, ego balance
  2. Vashya (2 pt) — power dynamic, mutual influence
  3. Tara (3 pt) — birth-star compatibility, fortune for partner
  4. Yoni (4 pt) — sexual / instinctive compatibility (animal natures)
  5. Graha Maitri (5 pt) — friendship of Moon-sign lords, mental wavelength
  6. Gana (6 pt) — temperament: Deva/Manushya/Rakshasa
  7. Bhakoot (7 pt) — Moon-sign relationship, financial/family alignment
  8. Nadi (8 pt) — most weighted; same Nadi = constitutional health/fertility risk

The Nadi dosha controversy

Same-Nadi marriages (Adi-Adi, Madhya-Madhya, Antya-Antya) score 0/8 on Nadi — instantly cutting 8 points. But classical texts have Nadi cancellation rules: same nakshatra-different pada, same rashi-different lord, or strong benefic combinations all cancel Nadi dosha. Many charts “rejected” on Nadi are actually compatible.

Beyond the score

Ashtakoot is one part of compatibility. Equally important: Manglik check, Dasha synchronisation, Lagna lord compatibility, 7th house health in both charts. A 30/36 match with both spouses in Mars-Saturn affliction can still face hardship.
